Oh, great. Winston Peters once again forms a jagged alliance with an increasingly desperate major party. Have we learnt nothing in nine years?

Not only that, but Peters is now our Minister of Foreign Affairs, outside of Cabinet. It is absurd that such an important portfolio sits outside Cabinet - it surely is a central part of New Zealand policy direction.

Peter Dunne survives again, also as a Minister outside Cabinet.

The Greens, Labour's most strident backers, are left out in the cold.

I don't really feel like a detailed analysis right now. More political kabuki later.

This is plainly ridiculous. According to the election results, and only if you regard New Zealand First and United Future as right leaning, which is a tenuous claim - both parties are clearly centrist, appealing to "Middle New Zealand" and did not commit to either of the two major parties, instead choosing to talk to the largest party in parliament first - the vote share of the right leaning parties is less than one percent more than the left leaning ones - 49.71% to 49%. A very slim plurality based on a dodgy premise does not a mandate make.

Indeed, if we classify United Future and New Zealand First as non-aligned swing votes (which is not unreasonable given their pre-election declarations of support), the left-leaners (Labour, the Greens, the Progressives and the Maori Party) trounce the right-leaners (National and ACT) 49-41.15.

He also has sour grapes about the way National conducted its campaign. What a surprise, a political party attempting to maximise its share of the vote and win an election. Oh lordy, what next?

And to think I voted for this turkey. Admittedly it was in 1996. I was young and stupid. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
